Celebrating excellence in video gaming across the board, the Golden Joystick Awards are the longest-established video games awards in the world and are the only UK awards voted for by the people that really matter - the gamers themselves. Last year a phenomenal 540,000 people aired their views and this year the Golden Joystick Awards want to hit the magic million mark to help truly represent the opinions of the gaming community - The National Student wants to help them hit that target.

The final results of this year’s Golden Joystick Awards will be announced at the now infamous awards ceremony, held on October 26 at the Hilton Hotel on London’s exclusive Park Lane which will again be broadcast live on the CVG website: cvg.co.uk

Last year’s webcast saw an impressive 5,000 gamers log on around the world to watch the awards as they happened.
Celebrating a milestone in its history this year the awards turn 25 amidst one of the most exciting periods in gaming - ever!

The highly anticipated PlayStation 3 hit the shops in March and last year was the recipient of the coveted ‘Ones To Watch’ award and all eyes will be on the console throughout this year’s voting period. Following the release of the Nintendo Wii last December, it remains to be seen whether Nintendo can retain their stranglehold over the awards as they did in 2006. The Nintendo DS swept the boards in the ‘year of the handheld’ but everything points to a mighty showdown between the Wii, PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

This year it will be a close call with power and innovation fighting it out to the finish - will it be the pure power of the PS3, or the startling innovation of the Nintendo Wii?
Possibly it will be a mix of both with the Xbox 360 showing off impressive power with the innovation of 360 live with its unique Marketplace facility - the choice is yours.
The Golden Joystick Awards were first held in 1982 when Atari, Commodore and Spectrum ruled the earth, and a huge gorilla called Donkey Kong terrorised arcades up and down the country. And unlike other games award ceremonies where winners are chosen by a panel of industry bigwigs, winners of a Golden Joystick are receiving recognition from the great games-playing public.
